    Requirements

    • Aged 18 or over, with hire and reward insurers generally wanting 21 or over.
    • Full UK driving licence held for at least a year, right to work confirmed.
    • A 5 seat car or small van in decent mechanical order.
    • SD&P insurance plus hire and reward or a carriage of goods add-on on your personal policy.
    • Smartphone running the Amazon Flex app.
    • Clean-ish criminal record and driving history check.

    Realistic earnings

Amazon's national advertised range of £14 to £18 an hour holds, with 2025 driver reports showing 3 hour blocks around £48 to £52 and 4 hour blocks at £62 to £70. Birmingham's ring of motorways means some routes run quickly inside the inner ring while others send you out to Solihull, Wolverhampton or Walsall and eat the block. Net take-home after fuel, CAZ on a non-compliant car, insurance and wear is realistically £10 to £14 an hour for careful drivers, lower if you run a non-compliant diesel inside the CAZ every day.

    Busiest times and areas

Amazon runs delivery stations in and around Birmingham and the Black Country. Block availability and station codes change, so check the Amazon Flex app for the nearest depot and its current block supply. Drivers report the best 4 hour blocks in the run up to Christmas peak, and the worst block supply in January and February when Amazon trims excess capacity.

    Local costs

    • Birmingham's Clean Air Zone is a Class D scheme inside the A4540 Middleway, charging £8 a day for non-compliant cars and £9 a day for non-compliant taxis and small vans in 2025 to 26. HGVs and coaches pay more. A non-compliant Flex car used 5 days a week inside the Birmingham CAZ costs about £40 a week, roughly £2,000 a year.
    • Hire and reward insurance in Birmingham postcodes runs £900 to £1,400 a year on top of SD&P for a typical driver.
    • Factor parking fines near depots and at residential drops, especially on permit streets in Edgbaston, Moseley and Kings Heath.

    Local support

    • Union coverage: IWGB Couriers and Logistics branch, GMB Birmingham and ADCU all accept Flex enquiries, with GMB strongest on Amazon-specific organising.
    • Debt advice and tax help: StepChange, Citizens Advice Birmingham, Business Debtline for self-employed debts and HMRC Time to Pay on 0300 200 3822.
    • Legal support for deactivation: Leigh Day and Bates Wells will consider tribunal claims where worker status or discrimination bites. For a standing score appeal, the jeff@amazon.co.uk escalation route after a template refusal remains the pattern UK drivers report most often.
