    Trading allowance checker

See whether the £1,000 trading allowance saves you tax versus claiming actual expenses.

    Methodology

    This tool assumes:

    • The trading allowance gives £1,000 of tax-free trading income per tax year.
    • If gross trading income is £1,000 or less, you generally do not need to register or report it (subject to other reporting obligations).
    • If gross income is over £1,000, you can either deduct actual allowable expenses OR the £1,000 allowance — not both.
    • The allowance is per person, not per trade — combine all self-employed income against the single £1,000.
    • The allowance cannot create a loss; if expenses exceed income, deducting expenses gives the loss, not the allowance.
