Methodology
This tool assumes:
- MIF applies to claimants DWP classes as 'gainfully self-employed' once the 12-month start-up period ends.
- Default expected hours for MIF are 35/week (full-time), reduced for caring responsibilities or limited capability for work.
- MIF = expected hours × age-relevant National Minimum Wage × 4.33 weeks per month, less a notional deduction for tax and NI.
- Notional tax/NI deduction is approximated at 15% — the actual DWP figure varies by earnings; check your statement.
- If actual monthly earnings exceed the MIF, your real earnings are used; the MIF only bites when you earn less.
